Der Ring des Nibelungen, by Richard Wagner

The 2023 performance of Der ring des Nibelungen.

Bismarckstraße 35, 10627 Berlin, Germany

Here a ring, there a ring, everywhere a ring-a-ling, but always in the best of taste! Yes, Roxie, here’s another spin on Wagner’s overwhelming epic, this one from the fertile imagination of Stefan Herheim. As established by his landmark Parsifal for the Bayreuth Festival and Meistersinger for Salzburg, Herheim is arguably the brainiest, certainly one of the most musical, and intermittently also the most naughtily off-the-wall of current Wagnerites. Produced in the teeth of the pandemic, his “Ring” went straight to DVD for home viewing. It’s gotten high marks for attention to detail (undeniable) and been dismissed as a mess (also undeniable). As for the best of taste, an awful lot of extras (and principals, too) are all over the place in their skivvies. —Matthew Gurewitsch
