What links Hugh Hefner and Marilyn Monroe? Playboy’s first-ever issue, published in 1953. Featuring a smiling Monroe in a plunging neckline, the cover exclaims “First time in any magazine full color the famous Marilyn Monroe nude.” Hefner never met Monroe, yet he chose to be buried next to the actress at the Westwood Village Memorial Park cemetery, in Los Angeles. “Spending eternity next to Marilyn is too sweet to pass up,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 2009. More than 1,000 objects from both of their lives are now being sold at auction. Dating from their shared birth year, 1926, to the early 1960s, the lots include clothing, photographs, documents, furniture, and art. Among the highlights are the original first issue of Playboy, a Pucci dress worn by Monroe, a Roberto Cavalli bunny costume, an etching by Picasso, and prints by Joan Miró. —Jeanne Malle
