The Gunpowder Plot

8-12 Tower Hill Vaults London EC3N 4EE

In a vault inside the Tower of London—a fortress built by William the Conqueror in 1066—an immersive show plops viewers into the year 1605. The production is set on the day of the Gunpowder Plot, when a group of provincial English Catholics attempted to blow up the House of Lords during a meeting of parliament. (They were unsuccessful and the traitors were executed). The audience meets the shadowy figures behind the bloody mission and is tasked with infiltrating the group to thwart its plans. The event is recreated by 20 actors and elements of virtual reality. The dimly lit tunnels and vaults are where it all actually happened. Time Out has named The Gunpowder Plot the “gold standard” for immersive theater. —Jensen Davis
