The Ring Cycle

2301 Flora Street, Dallas, TX 75201, United States

Okay, so you’ve had it up to here with genius directors. Fabio Luisi and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s “Ring” cycle may be the answer to your prayer. This spring they’re serving jumbo sneak peeks in the form of Das Rheingold (in which the magic metal is forged into the ring that rules the world) and Die Walküre (in which, for the most part, we forget about all that). Come October, there will be previews of Siegfried (in which a clueless hero winds up in possession of the ring) and Götterdämmerung (in which a heroine who knows all tosses it back into the waters it came from). Then, finally, the whole enchilada (October 13 to 18). Luisi knows his way around top international companies like the Met (where he shared “Ring” duties with that late “Ring” maestro James Levine) and the Semperoper Dresden; he has fielded a promising slate of seasoned champs and fresh faces. For extracurricular fun and games, there are lectures, rehearsals, fat-cat dinners with members of the cast, etc. Given the opera-in-concert sales pitch, it’s curious that the announcement names a stage director. Meet Alberto Triola, an arts administrator of vast administrative and practical experience, currently ensconced as superintendent and artistic director of the Arturo Toscanini Foundation, in Parma. No word of décor, costumes, lighting. Here’s hoping less is more. —Matthew Gurewitsch
