Tudors Trilogy

A scene from Maria Stuarda, one opera in the trilogy.

June 18–30, 2024
Boulevard du Théâtre 11, 1211 Genève, Switzerland

Stefano Montanari conducts, Mariame Clément directs, and Julia Hansen designs Donizetti’s Tudor triptych, which the composer never conceived as such, but maybe he should have. Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux will be presented in two three-evening cycles, with triple duty for three of the principals. The fiery Elsa Dreisig, soprano, portrays the tragic Anne Boleyn in the first opera, then Anne’s daughter Elizabeth I in the other two. The fire-eating mezzo Stéphanie d’Oustrac is always the other woman, which in the middle opera makes her the title character. The tenor Edgardo Rochas takes on Anne’s ex Percy (Anna Bolena), the two-timing Leicester (Maria Stuarda), and Roberto Devereux, who is both a two-timer and a military failure. The only role of comparable stature is Henry VIII, who throws his imposing weight around Anna Bolena in the person of Alex Esposito. —Matthew Gurewitsch
